Details:
Catalina Island lies approximately 30 miles off of the coast of Southern California. Ferries run to and from the island daily from San Pedro, Dana Pt, and Newport. The island is known for scuba diving, great beaches, quaint coastal towns, and picturesque views.
The Trans Catalina Trail runs across the island in a meandering point-to-point for a total of 38.5 miles and 11,000 ft of elevation changes. For TCT24, start in the larger town of Avalon and end in the smaller town of Two Harbors. Arrive in Avalon as early as possible (approximately 0900 on most ferry schedules), then catch the ferry out of Two Harbors on the next day (aim for approximately the same time as your arrival for the 24 hour limit). Fill out a free hiking permit through The Catalina Conservancy. The main concerns are rattlesnakes which are prevalent along the trail, staying hydrated as the trail is largely sun-exposed, and keeping a consistent pace to complete the trail in time for the ferry home.
